The Future of Zoom-a-thon OMIS

After a fun five years, it has been decided to retire the Zoom-a-thon at Oak Mtn Intermediate School. This website and it's accompanying FB page will be removed or drastically altered between now and the end of the 2013-2014 school year.

It's been a fun and wacky five years. Thanks to everyone who donated their time, talent, or money to making this fundraiser such a great success.

Don't forget to keep an eye out for Z. You never know when he'll pop up next.

Thanks for letting me in on all the fun,
Rachel K. Ivey

New Threat From Professor Ignoramoose

We just received this message from Professor Ignoramoose. Everybody, keep your eyes open and report any suspicious activity to The Legion of Zoom.

Episode 3: The Treacherous Time Warp Tomfoolery

Technology Sector is trapped by zombies under the power of the iBrainDrainerator 3000. Can they escape the horde and freed the zombies from its evil spell? Will Engineering Sector be able to defeat the Impulse Gravity Generator (IGGY)? IGGY is making things "heavy" and they don't have any "time" to spare! Can Engineering Sector defeat it before it's too late?

Episode 2: The Baffling Brain Drain Debacle

Can Science Sector escape the paralyzing plants and successfully defeat the Photosynthesizer. Will Technology Sector be luckier when they go up against the iBrainDrainerator 3000. It's using wifi to siphon off people's brain power through their very own electronic devices. Can Tech Sector disarm the device before it spreads to the whole city and its effects become permanent?

Episode 1: The Paralyzing Plant Paradox

Professor Ignoramoose has taken Agent Z hostage and hidden four ee-vil devices around the city, which The Legion of Zoom must find and disarm using the power of STEM (science, technology, engineering, and math). It this first episode, Science Sector goes up against the Photosynthesizer, a device which is causing the plants around the school to grow like crazy. Can Science Sector defeat the device in time, and will it take a mega weedeater to do it?

It's Nearly Here!

The 5th annual Zoom-a-thon Kick-off Pep Rally is tomorrow afternoon at 1:30pm at Oak Mtn. Intermediate School. This year's pep rally will be emceed by the outstanding OMIS coaches and will feature pumped up music, skits, games, and you'll finally get to find out what this year's awesome Zoom-a-thon prizes will be.

We've simplified things by doing away with per lap donations in favor of the easier to calculate flat donations. We hope you'll volunteer and sponsor a runner or two or three.

What's Your Sector?

Have you noticed the pattern? Each Legion of Zoom sector uses a different color to identify itself: Red for Science, Purple for Technology, Yellow for Engineering, Green for Math, and Blue for STEM (all sectors). If you had to join one of these sectors, which color would YOU be?

Meet PROFESSOR IGNORAMOOSE

Meet PROFESSOR IGNORAMOOSE (Ig-no-ray-moose), aka PROFESSOR MELVIN ENGLEBERT HUMPERDINK. PROFESSOR IGNORAMOOSE took to the ee-vil path 5 years ago when his dreams of becoming the Zoom-a-thon mascot were crushed. He still lives at home with his mommy and, although he doesn't want others to know this, his Fortress of Ee-vil is actually the garden shed in the back yard. He's a fan of overdue library books, coloring outside the lines, and upholding the standards of being an ee-vil super villain.

Meet AGENT ZERO

Meet AGENT ZERO. AGENT ZERO is the S.T.E.M. Kicker for AGENT Z. His real name is ZELOS ZELOS, which means "cricket," but when AGENT Z thought he said "Zero Zero," AGENT ZERO didn't have the heart to correct him. Although undocumented, it's probable that AGENT ZERO also hails from a small planet somewhere in the vicinity of Betelgeuse.

Meet AGENT Z

Meet AGENT Z, aka ZENON ZEKI, aka, Z THE MASCOT, aka ZENON ZEKI, AGENT OF S.T.E.M. AGENT Z is the mascot of the Zoom-a-thon Fun Run and vital to its success. He's a S.T.E.M. Hero, which is why his cape is blue. He has fun wherever he goes and works hard to encourage kids to raise more money for their school!

Meet VECTOR

Meet VECTOR. She's the Math Sector Kicker. She's sassy and quick witted. She's always there to help ARCHIMEDES get the job done, even if she sometimes has to look like a baked potato to do it!

Meet ARCHIMEDES

Meet ARCHIMEDES. He's the Math Sector Hero.

ARCHIMEDES takes his name from famous Greek mathematician, Archimedes of Syracuse. Archimedes of Syracuse is considered to be one of the greatest mathematicians of all time. He put his math to good use as an inventor of siege engines and the Archimedes Screw, an efficient way of moving water uphill.

Meet RATCHET

Meet RATCHET. She's the Engineering Sector Kicker. RATCHET has a keen mind and cool head under pressure. You can always count on her to come up with a great idea to solve a problem, even if she has to do it in alphabetical order.

Meet GODDARD

Meet GODDARD. She's the Engineering Sector Hero. If something needs to be engineered and built, GODDARD is your gal. From Communicators to slingshots, GODDARD can engineer it all.

GODDARD takes her super hero name from Robert H. Goddard, American engineer and Father of Modern Rocketry. Robert H. Goddard's work built the foundation upon which NASA built the American space program.

Meet BETA

Meet BETA. She's the Technology Sector Kicker and came from Pluto with SPARCK to help keep her out of trouble. BETA doesn't have a problem with Earth saying Pluto is not a planet but actually a dwarf planet, but she prefers the term "Little Planet."

Meet SPARCK

Meet SPARCK. She's a princess from Pluto and the Technology Sector hero. She came to Earth when she found out we downgraded Pluto from planet to dwarf planet. She says, they are, too, a planet and always tries her hardest to convince us we've made a terrible mistake. SPARCK provides some much needed fun and creativity to the Legion of Zoom.

SPARCK takes her super hero name from Karen Sparck Jones, British teacher and computer scientist. Karen Sparck Jones' ground-breaking work in natural language processing and information retrieval is still impacting us today through the behind-the-scenes workings of search engines, such as Google.

Meet KID QUASAR

Meet KID QUASAR. He's the Science Sector Kicker and helps TESLA and BACON get the job done. KID QUASAR is quick on his feet and has a very effective front kick.

Meet BACON

Meet BACON. He and his twin sister, TESLA, are the Science Sector Heroes. BACON gets himself in to all sorts of funny situations. Thankfully, TESLA is there to help straighten things out. Science Sector is front and center in Zoom-a-thon Episode 1 and the beginning of Episode 2.

Although BACON is a huge fan of the breakfast meat, bacon, he actually takes his super hero name from English scientists, Francis Bacon and Roger Bacon. Roger Bacon was an English scientist from the 1200s and Francis Bacon was an English scientist from the 1500s. Both Bacons made contributions to science through their advocation for the scientific method of discovery through experimentation.

Meet TESLA

Meet TESLA. She and her twin brother, BACON, are the Science Sector Heroes. Like most siblings, TESLA and BACON fight an awful lot, but they still manage to get the job done. Science Sector will take center stage in Zoom-a-thon Episode 1 and the beginning of Episode 2.

TESLA takes her super hero name from scientist, Nikola Tesla, a Serbian-born American scientist, inventor, physicist, and engineer. Nikola Tesla is best known for his work with alternating current electricity.
